Volunteering at Weston Community League

Volunteering is the heart and soul of the Women's Community League, which is dedicated to serving the community of Weston.  Please feel free to sign up for any of the opportunities below. It is a great way to get to know people with whom you share a common interest... while giving back.  If you have any questions, please email us at lesyle@fligor.biz or kettlefamily@comcast.net.

Thank you!

WCL Committee and Job Descriptions

Membership

The Membership Committee is responsible for the recruitment and retention of members. Committee members shall reach out to prospective members, help coordinate membership drives, and assist at WCL events by greeting guests and members. The Membership Committee is charged with conducting a membership survey every two years that will help shape future programs.

Social/Events

The Social/Events Committee is responsible for the planning and execution of WCL’s key ongoing events - the Opening Coffee (early fall), Friendsgiving (November), Holiday Luncheon (early December) and Spring Luncheon (early May). Committee volunteers participate in planning the décor, menu, location and entertainment for each event, as well as staffing and executing the event itself. The committee will coordinate with other committees for newsletter communication, website registration, social media promotion, and onsite check-in.

The Social/Events committee is also responsible for planning and executing varied activities that complement WCL's standing events, bringing elements of added interest and expanded opportunities to socialize with other members. The committee will aspire to keep events fresh - modifying to reflect the changes in taste and interests of the WCL membership. Some socials may include significant others, some may welcome non-members, and some may be exclusive to WCL members only. Many socials will be free of charge, while some will have a cost associated or will be deemed "fund raisers."  Each year the social committee will hold a social with the purpose of attracting new-members to WCL. The committee will work with other committees for newsletter coordination, website registration, social media promotion, and onsite check-in.

Speaker Series

Speaker Series brings together WCL members to listen or actively participate in a presentation on a relevant topic determined by the Speaker Series Committee. The committee will brainstorm ideas, determine topics, dates and venues, and oversee the implementation of approximately three programs per WCL calendar year. The committee will work with other committees for newsletter coordination, website registration, social media promotion and onsite check-in. Social Committee volunteers will be available to assist at events as needed.

Dining Around
The Dining Around Committee will coordinate regular dining experiences at restaurants in the area. Whether trying out a new restaurant, revisiting a known favorite, or even having a simple soup and salad luncheon at a member’s home, this committee will coordinate regular lunches during the WCL calendar year at which smaller groups of members can gather for a shared experience.

Scholarship

The Scholarship Committee is responsible for receiving annually the applications of graduating high school seniors that have applied and qualified for need-based scholarships in coordination with the Weston High School guidance department. The committee is charged with processing, evaluating, interviewing, and selecting deserving winners of these scholarships. The Scholarship Chair ultimately presents the merit awards at WHS Class Day. Strict confidentiality is required of committee members as applications contain financial information. Limited paper work and time is required to serve on this committee as the work is completed within a narrow timeframe - starting in late April and ending with Class Day in late May/early June. This committee will interact with the Financial Investment/Advisory Committee and the WCL Treasurer.

Outreach/Philanthropy

The Outreach/Philanthropy committee will work with various local and Metro-West organizations by donating financial resources and goods and/or services throughout the year, which are in line with the WCL mission. Committee members will engage and coordinate with other WCL committees to promote service drives, working closely with the Social/Events committee to weave in philanthropy wherever possible.

Website and Outgoing Communications

The Webmaster will provide continuous improvements and updates to wclweston.org to enhance the end-to-end user experience, improve quality of the content, design, information architecture, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Tasks include finding, importing, and editing images, proofing webpages, performing testing, I.e., ensure hyperlinks work, posting documents to a document library, posting updates, monitoring incoming queries and routing them accordingly, and generating reports. In addition, they are responsible for generating a weekly newsletter for membership as well as sending out email notifications.

Publicity/
Social Media
The Publicity and Social Media committee manages the WCL social media accounts (on Facebook and Instagram) and works with publications (Weston-Wellesley magazine, Neighbors, the Weston Owl) to promote events and newsworthy initiatives. Committee members may be asked to take pictures at events and post them to social media or, on occasion, to write articles on behalf of the WCL.

Winter Festival

The Winter Festival Committee plans the yearly capstone event of the WCL. The Winter Festival is a community-wide celebration and tree lighting ceremony that began in 2018 as part of WCL's Centennial celebration. The committee is composed of a Central Committee that coordinates planning and production leading up to the event, with numerous volunteers needed on the day. Central Committee tasks include activities planning, fund raising, music and entertainment selection, design/layout, signage, permits, budgets, marketing, town/partner integration and volunteer staff coordination. Volunteers on the day have opportunities to place signage, meet and greet, sell tickets, staff games/activities, set-up and disassemble Town Hall Reception, and set-up and disassemble Gingerbread Village.
